A Quick Overview of Polymer Clays

Polymer clay is a sculptable material based on the polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It usually contains no clay minerals, and is only called "clay" because its texture and working properties resemble those of mineral clay. It is sold in craft, hobby, and art stores, and is used by artists, hobbyists, and children.

Pigments may be added to the translucent base to create a variety of colors, along with small amounts of kaolin or white china clay or other opaquing agents where opacity is desired. Mica may also be added to simulate pearlescent and metallic effects.

The Sculpey Clay Product Line Includes:

  • Super Sculpey:  Super Sculpey is the Ultimate Sculpting Compound! It is used by movie studios and professionals worldwide and a favorite with doll makers! See the history, characteristics and use below.
  • Super Sculpey Firm:Many Sculptors desire an extra firm clay that can be "carved" and used for projects that require fine details. Super Sculpey FIRM is the extra firm sculpting clay that is gray in color, allowing sculptors to create fine details and photographers to catch these fine points on film. Unique in both form and color, this new sculpting clay brings creative options to the sculpting world.
  • Sculpey III: This popular polymer comes in over 50 eye catching colors and maintains tooling and detailing beautifully. Once cured, Sculpey III bakes hard and takes on a matte, bisque type finish. Sculpey III can be easily mixed to form your own custom palette and can be mixed with other polymers such as Premo! Sculpey and Granitex. Try it, you’ll love it!
  • Granitex: Tiny fibers mixed into the clay Premo! Blockscreate this unusual stone like effect. Mixing will not alter the appearance of the clay; it will maintain the illusion. Granitex can be used to make figurines, jewelry, and home decor. Miniaturists have found it very useful in making architectural detailing.
  • Original Sculpey: America's original oven bake clay! Sculpey is soft and pliable, works and feels like ceramic clay, but will not dry out when exposed to air. Shape it into your desired form and bake according to package instructions. Once cool, it can be sanded, drilled, carved, and painted with waterbased acrylics or Sculpey brand glaze. Ideal for sculpture and children's projects.
  • And MANY Others: From the clays to tools, to ideas and project books, the Sculpey brand gives every member of the family the opportunity to free the limits of their creativity.

Building Sculptures With Sculpey Clay

If you have ever played with Playdough brand modeling clay you already have the necessary skills to begin working with Sculpey Clay.  But what makes Sculpey Clay different from Playdough, or potters clay, or porcelain clay?

  • You can store Sculpey clay for a very long period of time without it drying out. When I first wanted to explore the vast possibilities of sculpture I started with what many others started with, a terra cotta or porcelain clay.  I poked and prodded and shaped and molded the lump of clay into what I wanted.  Why did I start with this type of material?  Because that is what I saw was being used on PBS programs devoted to the beautiful and wonderful work of expert craftsmen.  Or I saw a course being offered at a local community college on throwing pots.

But if you were like me, I purchased a 5 pound box of potters clay, messed around for a while, and then put it away for a while.  But after a few weeks in the closet my 5 pound box of clay became a 5 pound rock.  Super Sculpey clay can stay plyable for many weeks and months with little effort to prime the clay to workability whenever the inspiration strikes your fancy.

  • You can fire Sculpey clay in an ordinary kitchen oven. After a while using the porcelain clay you may have even put something together that you wanted to keep and treasure.  Only then did I realize that my first ever sculpture would be my last using potters clay.  Firing the traditional clay takes several thousands of degrees of heat and hours in the kiln.

I had a few trinkets to fire, but the cost to purchase an electric kiln, or build a primitive outdoor kiln, or even rent time at a local pottery shop was way beyond what I wanted to invest in this new hobby.  I was still trying it out.  Sculpey clay can be hardened in an ordinary kitchen oven or toaster oven with minimal time, even less expense, and nearly no unpleasant aroma to bother the rest of the family.

  • Sculpey clay can be shaped, sanded, even rebaked to add on newly formed parts to your project. Put simply, Sculpey clay is a wonderful medium to create professional art at hobby prices.  And as your skills begin to blossom and grow, Sculpey clay will allow you to express your artistic design and imagination without hindering you or your pocketbook.
